The Forest Development Corporation of Maharashtra (FDCM) plays a pivotal role in wildlife conservation, with a multifaceted approach that includes habitat improvement, protection measures, and community engagement. FDCM’s conservation strategy is designed to preserve the rich biodiversity within its jurisdiction, focusing on both in-situ and ex-situ conservation efforts. The corporation undertakes various habitat development works such as water hole development, de-silting of perennial water bodies, and creation of meadows along water bodies to enhance the food/pray base for herbivores. These initiatives not only support the wildlife but also contribute to the ecological balance of the region.
In addition to habitat development, FDCM implements stringent protection measures to safeguard wildlife from poaching, overgrazing, and forest fires. The use of advanced technology like camera traps and the sensitization of staff play a crucial role in monitoring and protecting the diverse species found in Maharashtra’s forests. FDCM’s efforts extend to reducing man-animal conflicts by scientifically managing habitats to discourage wild animals from straying into human habitation, thus minimizing potential conflicts and fostering a harmonious coexistence.
